Scoping of nuclear options for Maritime and Offshore applications

Nuclear-21 is active in assessing the options for nuclear power’s use in maritime and offshore applications and has been contracted by various parties during the past years and currently undertaking more detailed assessment of specific nuclear reactor design options for particular maritime and offshore applications. Our expert team includes long-standing experience with such maritime applications and the various options one may consider. An this from a technical-economic perspective to the vary important regulatory approach co-guiding the roadmap for such maritime and offshore decarbonised futures.

Our current focus being on PWR and HTGR options aligned with the hoped-for timeline for such nuclear power use in a variety of vessels. Our team includes the experts having designed, developed and rendered operational PWR-type reactors for maritime applications as well as the HTGR-experts having designed, developed and build land-based HTGR projects during the past 30 years. Regarding the latter, Nuclear-21 recently operationalised a unique set of calculation codes for HTGRs. These are addressing all aspects from neutronics, transient analysis, fuel performance, coupled neutronics/thermohydraulics and stress analysis and critical to be ready with a licenseable design.

Given this experience, Nuclear-21 has an in-house core team investigating the use and design requirements for such maritime applications in view of roadmapping the most bankable option(s) for the nearby future and has embarked in new projects.
