At the end of 2024, the Dutch Ministry of Climate and Green Growth commissioned a consortium of Arcadis, AEF, Nuclear-21, the Technical University of Delft and DNV to carry out a series of simulations of the realisation of Small Modular Reactors (SMR) in The Netherlands.
Simulating the realisation of SMRs is part of the Ministry’s SMR programme. The simulations aim to increase knowledge about the realisation of SMRs among various stakeholders, gain practical experience and identify opportunities and bottlenecks in themes such as spatial integration, energy application, licensing, competent authority and the construction, operation of SMRs and the manufacturing industry. To this end, various scenarios on the licensing and realisation of SMRs will be simulated with stakeholders.
Currently being 9 months into the contract, significant insights on SMRs and their prospects as well as challenges have been identified and reported to the Dutch Ministry via the consortium. More information will be provided during the coming months once the outcome of this program be validated by the Dutch Ministry KGG.
